In the days of the old Roman Empire, what the empire says goes. So the Assassins have good reason to not want Templars calling the shots from the Inner Circle of the Roman government. In this affair, Aquilus was the Assassins' striking hand, tasked with killing corrupt Templar officials, and, eventually, recovering a Piece of Eden known as the Ankh. Anyway, Aquilus is a character from the French Assassin's Creed comic. This comic is VERY non-canon and is completely contradictory to the canon story- line. I found it rather intriguing. "Aquilus (unknown - 259 CE) was a Gallo-Roman Assassin, a member of the Assassin Brotherhood located in Lugdunum. Aquilus was a distant ancestor to Desmond Miles.
In 259, Aquilus was tasked with the assassinations of several high-ranked individuals within the Roman Empire. Having failed to assassinate his third target, General Gracchus, Aquilus met up with his cousin Accipiter - an Alaman and a fellow Assassin - from whom he obtained an ancient artifact known as the "Ankh", formerly held by the Egyptian goddess Isis.
After his father was murdered and the Ankh stolen by the Roman Senator CaĂÂŻus Fulvus Vultur, Aquilus traveled from Lugdunum to the Empire's capital of Rome, seeking vengeance. Successful in his objective, he returned home with the artifact, discovering more of its abilities. Eventually, Aquilus was executed by Roman soldiers."
