Growing up in steampunk Victorian England, Maria always dreamed of the day she'd own her own airship. She read the travel logs of all the famous sky captains, and became adept at engineering and astronomy. Then, on her 17th birthday, she learned that she was to be married to a man she didn't know and would be forced to be a housewife for the rest of her life. Panicking, she gathered her inheritance and snuck out of her house. She had heard of the Sky Captain Academy for Young Boys and Girls and had always dreamed of going there, and now was her last chance.Ten years later, Maria was the world-renowned sky captain of the airship The Jewel of Arabia, and had married a wealthy baron (for love, of course).
