In Japanese folklore, an onryo is a type yurei--what we would call a spirit or ghost. Specifically, an onryo was a woman who had been wronged during her lifetime, and therefore became a vengeful spirit after death. Onryos can be recognized by their long, wild hair and white burial kimono. The movie The Grudge was based upon the idea of onryos.
