The Last Guard.

When Atlantis fell to the Humans, every soldier, guard and able bodied shark-man rose to fight against their oppressors. In a civil war that raged for 40 years both sides were massacred until only a single member of each species was left: One Guardian of Atlantis and One Paladin of the Humans. These two threw aside their weapons and finally a peace was reached.

These two vowed that another war between the races would never happen again and ensured it by having the Testificate High Priest cast a spell which erased both the Merman's and the Human's memories.

The Merman was then sent to the land of Mar, a utopia of sorts for water creatures for an immortal lifetime.
The Human, whom we know as Steve, remained here on Earth as a reminder to its creatures of the wrong doings of the Humans that lead to their virtual extinction.
