Aksarknerk Krainyok
Aurora Borealis Is Coming
Aksarknerk Krainyok (in English "Aurora Borealis is coming") is the Inuit Goddess of luck and the weather phenomena aurora borealis.
Ancient Inuit tales vary greatly from region to region but the most well-known tale of Aksarknerk Krainyok has records dated very early in the Inuit history.
In the tale Krainyok and her father go hunting for polar bears to feed their village but are unexpectedly attacked by one from their rear. A polar bear had knocked Krainyoko s father down and was about to kill him. Before the bear could take a swipe at Krainyoko s father she leaped in front of the moving paw. The claws ripped through the flesh of her stomach but she gave her father enough time to grab his spear and throw it at the bear. His daughter did not survive but neither did the bear. As he brought back the bear to the village a beautiful green light glowed across the sky and all the villagers marveled at the sight.
By pure luck they found the polar bear but without Krainyoko s sacrifice the village would have starved. The gods recognized this selfless act and let her soul go to a higher plain and gave her a mystical pendant which gave Krainyok a new body worthy of a god. Whenever her wound opened the skies would turn green with her enchanted blood and with it Krainyoko s luck would come but only with sacrifice.
