Ded Moroz is the Russian version of Santa Claus, and is known for putting presents under the tree for New Years. However, in 1917 during a very strict time in Russian history, Ded Moroz was banished due to its presence in religion, and because it was considered a "child's god". Two decades later Moroz was allowed back in Russia, and has been a symbol of winter and snow ever since. He is technically an arctic creature due to his relation to snow and winter. He is not Santa Claus, however, due to the fact the Ded Moroz is very strict and punishes the lazy severely, whereas he is very nice to the dedicated.
