In Lord of the Rings, Sauron was originally a Maiar (basically like angels), a spirit born to aid a specific Valar (gods).He was born to serve Melkor, the Valar of Discord. Melkor (aka Morgoth) was sent to through the Door of Night, basically a prison, and Sauron took his place as the Dark Lord of Arda. Sauron built a massive tower in Mordor named Barad-Dur, which later housed his all-seeing eye (who desperately needs contact lenses). Sauron forged The One Ring in the volcano known colloquially as Mount Doom. Sauron was destroyed when Frodo (actually Gollum) threw the Ring (and Gollum,and his ring finger) into the lava of Mount Doom (he didn't actually do anything useful in the series, much unlike Gollum, I mean, why have a Hobbit when you have a Wizard, two men, and a dwarf to go along with you?)
