The Guardian of the Harvest

Description from original post (created 2013-10-25 20:24):

The villagers prepared to harvest the crops they had grown every year, but not without someone to protect them while they grew. Not everybody had as much as they did, and they were not willing to share their bounty. This meant that the crops were prone to being stolen, which could bear dire results. Since the Iron Golems were created to be loyal to all villagers, regardless of town or faction, a new being had to be created.

One spring many years ago, the village's priest, who possessed the ability to grant golems and other such beings intelligence and willpower, placed the town's prized pumpkin atop a stake of wood. The pumpkin had demonic eyes carved into it, and a lantern was put inside, to be lit whenever the Guardian was to come alive. The priest then draped a tunic over the creation and decorated it with all sorts of vines and flowers. The Guardian was kept inside the church until the harvest season came.

Finally, when the time came, the lantern was lit and the Guardian was let out. If seeing its piercing eyes in the dark wasn't enough to scare the invaders, its strength would surely deter them. The villagers survived the winter with enough food, and the others developed far enough agriculturally to sustain themselves without taking from others.

The Guardian still stands by the gate of its village today as a symbol of prosperity and overcoming hardship.
