Ulrich von Liechtenstein was instrumental in bringing about the inclusion of Styria into the Habsburg empire. The politician was also a gifted Minnesinger.
1200 Ulrich von Liechtenstein is born into the Murau line of his family.
1200-1215 From early childhood, the boy receives the traditional education of a knight. In the course of his training he serves as the page of a lady whom he is to revere for the rest of his life.
1215-1219 The young Ulrich is squire to Margrave Heinrich of Istria.
1223 Ulrich von Liechtenstein is knighted by Leopold VI.
1223-1260 The knight is actively involved in politics and also dedicates himself to literature. 1255 sees the completion of his work titled o Frauendiensto , which contains many Minne-songs.
1260-1278 Little is known about the last years of Styriao s high steward. It is likely that he was taken prisoner together with other noblemen.
1278 Ulrich von Liechtenstein dies aged 78, a very advanced age for the time. He is buried in Seckau.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein, Minnesinger and high steward (governor) of Styria, was born in the year 1200 into the Murau line of his family. From early childhood, he received the traditional education of a knight. After serving for several years as the page of a noble lady, he became the squire of Margrave Heinrich of Istria from 1215 to 1219. Finally, he was knighted by Leopold VI in 1223.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein owned three castles: Schloss Murau, the Frauenburg near Unzmarkt, and Burg Liechtenstein.
The leader of the Styrian nobility played an instrumental role in the preparations for Styriao s accession to the Habsburg empire. In other ways, too, Ulrich von Liechtenstein was a very political person. He travelled the country in disguise not only to participate in many tournaments, but also, for instance, to settle the dispute between Archbishop Egbert von Bamberg and one of the brothers of Margrave Heinrich of Istria.
Minnesinger
But Ulrich von Liechtenstein was also a writer. In 1255 he completed his novel o Frauendiensto , which was partly autobiographical and partly fictional. The father of a large family was also a keen student of the mediaeval poet Walther von der Vogelweide o and so his novel o Frauendiensto contains 58 Minne-songs.
Very little is known about the high stewardo s final years. However, it is likely that he was among the Styrian noblemen taken prisoner in 1269 by King Ottokar II of Bohemia. He died at the age of 78. Ulrich von Liechtenstein was buried in Seckau.
