Camões was a Portuguese poet, seaman, swordsman and voyager. After losing his right eye in a battle, he was sent to the African coast between 1554-1570 serving the navy. Whilst traveling out of Goa, India, there was a shipwreck which he survived. He swam to the coast with one hand while the other saved his epic work from the waves. He lost his Chinese lover then. When he finally returned to Portugal, in 1570, he published the epic he had been writing all those years: "Os Lusiadas".
