The days of old, the sea was a treacherous thing. Mother nature herself ensured any sailor be doomed in the waters. The sea was home to vicious monsters and sinful demons, serving as a prison for them. No one is safe when rattling the irons bars of a cell.
In a remote fishing village in China, a mother weeps for the loss of her unborn child, having been plagued by the sea. She was alone, her husband risking his life to bring home food for the village. She was afraid, her neighbors watching her mourn alone. She was gave in, her heart sinking like that of her husbands boat that same day. She was a mother to a lost child, and a wife to a missing husband. With no family to love and no friends to confide in, the woman took her own life.
Craddling her limp child, the woman threw herself into the darkened sea, and drowned. A family gone within a day.
The corpse of the mother and infant sank down into the darkness. The people of the village mourned for the family, taken by the sea. it was such a tragedy, enough so that even the ancient spirits could not keep from interfering.
A light began to shine from deep within the depths of the sea, far into endless darkness of the abyss. It shone bright with hope. the darkened skies grew clear, and the sea went still. It was calm. the light dimmed as its source rose to the surface. A fish-like man appeared, with sharp teeth and penetrating eyes that could see into your soul. And the light came from the stalk on its head. The light felt warm and soothing on the villagers skin. The frightening appearance of the creature was accepted by the villagers, as they knew it meant no harm.
It began to speak in the language of the spirits, translated by such spirits for the minds of the mortal. The creature said it's name was Ceratiidae, and they had locked the monsters of the sea in the world of spirits where they belonged. They promised the villagers that the sea would remain calm, and that they could safely travel and fish as they please.
All heads turned so suddenly as two of their own stepped foreward. The village looked in disbelief. A young couple stood before the calmer of the sea. The man and woman said nothing, only smiled. As they turned to depart, Ceratiidae spoke, "Goodbye mother." before the couple faded away, and Ceratiidae returned to the sea without another word.
