After the prosperous mining days in the 1800s this poor soul was left for dead when his mineshaft collapsed. He survived by drinking water from stalagmites and eating cave rats. After a while his lungs grew acclimated to conditions of cave living, but if he would so ever breath in one breath of oxygen extreme pain would ensue, thus he made himself a gasmask to help him breath in the cave conditions, he also equipped it with night vision.
