The stormtroopers were the servants and soldiers of Darth Vader. They were known for never hitting anyone with their blasters, and having armor so inefficient that people without it had a better time surviving.
Despite their hopelessness, they are maybe the most recognisable star wars character after Vader, and their popularity does not seem to go away.
