PRE-DAUNTLESS
Tobias Eaton had 4 fears, and one of these was going back to his old life at Abnegation where his cruel father could play every charade in the book on TV and show his true, cruel colours at home. As a boy, of only around 14, Tobias would reluctantly slomp down stairs and greet his father when he got back home from work. He always prayed that the mean side of Marcus wasn't out that day, but 90% of the time...it was.
You can still make out the faint whip marks, and lash scars now on his back. Little rivets and bumps in his skin each one reminiscent of a horrible time in his life, and each one holding a little piece of his evil father inside - always reminding Tobias of his presence. And so when the chance came up at aged 16 to be able to escape his old Abnegation life and become his own person, in a complete other faction of society.
The steps crumbled under the feet of the teenager, and he could feela huge, lumbering weight hanging over his shoulders. This was a mix of fear, for both his future and his father (mainly the latter) and the fact that he could literally feel his parents looking right through him. The boy loved his mother, she was the one person who understood his pain and they were a kind of 'team' around Marcus, neither wanting the other to get hurt. The saddened looks of his mother weren't the only pair of eyes looking his way though. The piercing stare of his fathers egotistical cruelty, and the other thousand initiates all counting down the people until they had to stand up and either stay a long and regretful life in their factions, or feel the intense force of betrayal if they leave.
Tobias walked up to the five great bowls that stood before him and eyed each one in turn, lingering with 2 or 3. HE walked past the recepticle filled with Earth to represent the peacedul life of Amity, and then the Candor Glass, the Erudite bowl was the last one he mentally ticked off in his head. He then was at the end of the table, with two bowls lingering on his shoulders. He picked up the knife, wincing as he did so, and cut just outside of his finger nail, letting the blood fall into the sizzling coals that lay beneath. He had chosen Dauntless.
Tobias had five symbols tattoed onto his back. Each one representing a faction, and a completely paradox way of
living to the other. His reasoning for this was he didn't want to just live by
one sector of the community's rules. He wanted to be
Peaceful,
and Intelligent,
and Honest,
and Brave,
and Selfless.
He wanted to be DIVERGENT.
The Dauntless Base is shown as being hidden in an underground series of caverns. The initiates have to jump from a ledge, into the area. All transfers have to sleep together (both genders) in a small dwellings with metal beds and crisp mattresses - Not very Comfortable! The canteen is seen as being the biggest room and is a place for both initates and transfers to mingle between eachother. The fighting room is vast, and full of all of the standard Dauntless Fighting Gear including punchbags, and a boxing ring. The Hub is the huge atrium style space where people can go shopping, eating, tattoing and more. It has a huge waterfall/ravine travelling even further underground.
This relates to the contest theme, as this being (Tobias) can be seen as dwelling underground, and lurking beneath the surface of the town. Dauntless's rarely visit the outside world and so the caves they live in, are their homes.
