For spooky costume hijinks, who do you turn to? Why Scooby Doo and the gang, of course! Yes, the intrepid team of Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma have had their fare share of run-ins with ne'er do wells who don costumes to pull off nefarious crimes. This guy is a classic: The Ghost Diver, from the second episode of the show, which originally aired in 1969.
Story Plot!
Old Captain Cutler was a salty sea-dog if ever there was one. He knew the way of the waves and would plumb the depths in his antique diving suit looking for long lost treasures. The waters of Rocky Point Beach were his domain, but then the young, rich folk started coming around. They knew nothing of the ocean, zipping around in their fancy yachts, always getting too close to Captain Cutler’s boat and blocking the way of his vessel. He warned the fancy newcomers that they would cause an accident, and if they didn’t show respect the ocean would curse them all!
Then, one foggy night it happened. Someone carelessly driving their big yacht collided with Captain Cutlers old ship, tearing a hole in its side and sending it and Captain Cutler to the bottom of the sea. Not long after the tragic accident, fancy ships started disappearing into the fog. Each time, witnesses say they saw a ghostly green glow moving through the mist. Some even claimed they saw an antique diving suit rise out of the water, emitting an eerie green light. It wasn’t long before everyone concluded it was Old Captain Cutler’s ghost, enacting his revenge!
And that’s where Scooby Doo and the gang come in! They never shy away from a good mystery, and something about this story sounded a little fishy. Oh, they saw the ghost and had a couple of good scares, but they noticed some of the seaweed also glowed green and discovered a huge stash of air tanks ready to use that had all recently been filled. Things were starting to look than less supernatural, so Velma, Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby hatched a plan to capture the ghostly diver and solve the mystery!

Zoinks! It turns out the ghost really WAS Old Captain Cutler, but he was very much alive! Apparently he used the boat accident to fake his death, and his wife started the myth that his ghost was wandering the Rocky Point Beach area. Cutler then put on the costume of his old diving suit and started stealing the fancy yachts right out of the Marina, planning to re-paint them and sell them
for profit. A clever plan, and they would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids!
