This is khai-chan

she was once a normal 5 year old, that was 10 years ago

now she's 15, and her family is dead, they sacrificed themselves for Khai-chan's safety

The dirt is for all these years she has spent falling and tripping in the wastelands...

The dirt is also from the years of exploring
