The Girl in the Red Jacket

The year is 4026. The day is December 25.

Christmas.

Exactly ten years after the nuclear war--and 23 year old Ayer Peterson has been caged inside of a small, suffocating shelter since then. Only leaving a few times was enough for the extreme radiation to affect her--some of her skin rotted, letting the pink-ish flesh be seen and infected as well. Ice coated her hands and parts of her face. The side of her head is caked in blood from an encounted with some sort of thing that Ayer didn't have a name for yet.

Christmas... Just the thought of the day that Ayer and her family lost brought tears to her already burning eyes. Great...as if she wasn't in enough pain.

That day...December 25, 4016. It had all been so sudden. So unexpected. I mean, sure, the bomb threat had been there for a while, but that was it. It had just been there. Hanging over the world by a thread. No one ever thought it would happen until the alarms in each home were blaring, shouting at all citizens to evacuate their homes and head to shelter. Naturall, Ayer and her now-dead-brother were the only ones to make it.

Before the disaster, the area was populated by four thousand people.

Afterwards, there were only two.

Sighing deeply, Ayer placed her head on the ground and closed her eyes to the searing pain in her head and pulled her blood red, dirt-covered jacket tighter around her freezing form. And she never woke up.
