〚ᵏᵃˢˢᶤᵉ〛~ Skin Base + Mini Hair Tutorial

by Kassie

Description from original post (created 2016-05-20 14:10):

This is the previous base that I made for my skins, I have since changed it around a little and so I'm posting this :)

I'm going to include a mini hair tutorial as well for this style of hair shading I used! If you use my base please give credit to me, of course you don't have to keep this hair shading or bangs if you don't like it.. :)

(I know that hair shading tutorials are all over the place, but I think it would be nice to have a hair shading tutorial included with a skin base that can work together)

Quick notes:
To make skins I use MCSkin3D, made by Paril

This base is for the Alex model, if you create a Steve skin with this it's going to look a bit strange

The front of the hair is included in Step 6, for some reason the spoiler box wasn't behaving for me!

If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM or leave a comment :)

Remember to credit me if you do use this base!

Back of the hair:

Step 1
First extend the darkest line in a really long U shape down the back of the skin, make it however long you want :)

Step 2
Decide what kind of hair shape you want to make - do you want it to be more sharp and more V shaped or more flat and even? If you want it sharp, make it something like this:

Sharper hair in my opinion looks a bit strange unless it's very long, but I decide on a more rounder shorter style:

Step 3
Leaving the top line of colour, I copy the style from the top of the head but make it a bit wider, like this:

Step 4
I then fill in the gap and fill in the middle of the lines I just made, leaving 1 pixel of the previous colour like so:

Step 5
Then I do the same as the last step but with a lighter colour:

Step 6 - Finishing Touches
After that, these are some of the things I really like to do to make the hair look more interesting and pop more, I add an extra lighter colour (1 pixel on the top head hair, however many pixels you need on the bottom body hair) because this just makes the hair look more shiny and like it's glistening a little bit.

I also like to take the darkest hair colour at the back of the hair and make dots like so:

And to make the hair look more rounded along the sides, this is the pattern I make on the outer layer sides of the head - it's easy as long as you remember to follow the pattern of the hair that's there already!

I do that on both the left and right side, also I put it at the back unless I put a plait / braid at the back of the hair - then it just gets in the way of the braid!
Front of the hair
First create the shape of the hair - make sure you use the second darkest hair colour you have, not the darkest

Then like the same method as before, only this time in the middle line of the hair, go from darkest to lightest, like so:

Sometimes if you have a shorter side of hair at the front, it can look weird if it's too shiny, so I only used a few lighter colours - you'll have to test and experiment yourself and see what looks nice on your skin!
