Late Roman infantry

In the dusk of the Roman empire with full legions long disbanded or rebelled these remaining legionary garrisons held the sponsored safety of the remaining settlements from Rome and Spain to the Rainy moorlands of Londinium, reaching the borders of Scotland. Fighting in vain against raiding Norsemen, Saxons and roaming hordes of Huns and Germanic tribes.

Upon his head he wears a steel helmet, his chest bears a rain dulled baggy chainmail vest. Around his neck raps a green shawl pined with a bronze Honour brooch, down his legs are worn trousers and muddied hide boots. In his left hand he would bear a large oval or smaller round shield. In his right hand would be a firm spear with a sword at his belt should it break.

Although still fighting for the Roman empire most of these men were either descended from older garrisons or conscripted from the local provinces they inhabit.
