I'm done with trying to maintain a custom skin. I pieced together a bunch of terrain skins and weapons as well as added a couple tweaks my self, which adds up to a lot of copy and pasting different files. I wouldn't mind if I had to add a new object or block to the images once in awhile, but adding the files to the .jar over and over again is becoming annoying! Notch should separate all the graphics into one folder to making skinning easier. What also would be great is if someone could release a skin manager that replaces the skins with a click of a button. (Unless I missed it somewhere.)
I've actually tried this my self and got fairly far with a GUI and file selection using AHK, but winrar won't extract the minecraft.jar file using the following batch file:
"C:\Program Files\WinRar\unrar.exe" x -p- -r "minecraft.jar" pause
