Recently, I made my own skin (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/charjp.png/) and so I replaced the old skin in my minecraft folder (%appdata%->.minecraft->bin->minecraft.jar->mob->char) and everything seemed to be working fine; I could see my new skin and it was looking pretty nifty.
However, I later realised that, while playing on SMP, other people can't see my new skin, but I can (in 3rd person mode).
After trawling the internet for a while, I found that you had a preferences page on minecraft.net, so I browsed for my skin and uploaded it. However, when I do so, there doesn't seem to be any visible change to the default skin to the side of the "edit in your favorite image editing tool and save it as a png image"= as here.
Is there some way to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S - Lately, I've also been getting a "Connection refused:connect" message when I try to log onto my server sometimes. Could this have something to do with it?
