The struggling Canberra Raiders take on a Wests Tigers outfit that’s won five on the trot in this Saturday evening clash at Canberra Stadium. Join us for live scores and commentary from 5.30pm AEST.
It’s a new look Raiders team, with regular fullback Josh Dugan shifting to five eighth in a shock move by coach David Furner.
Canberra have struggled with their halves combination since Terry Campese suffered another season-ending knee injury in Round 7, and it’ll be fascinating to see how the incredibly gifted Dugan handles his new role.
For the Tigers, while they’re enjoying a much-needed winning streak, they could hardly be said to be running hot. The majority of their games have gone right down to the wire and have only been decided in the dying minutes.
Still, they’ve shown an undeniable ability to win the tight ones, and if it comes to that again they’ll back themselves to go on with the job.
In team news, Blake Ayshford is in doubt and will be given until kick-off to prove his fitness, but should it come to that, the Tigers have plenty of capable halves replacements in Tim Moltzen, Chris Lawrence and Tom Humble.
Liam Fulton on the other hand is back for the Tigers and will bolster their forward ranks. This means they are almost back to full strength up front, save for UK international Gareth Ellis.
There’s no doubt Dugan has the ability to heavily influence a game of football, but whether he can do so from five eighth remains to be seen. If he rises to the occasion then the Raiders are a strong chance in this one, especially with the home ground advantage.
For mine though, the Tigers have too much class and experience right across the park and are deserved favourites.
