YEAR: 2087
PLACE: An unnamed island in the Pacific
DESCRIPTION: A squadron of international scientists hired by multiple governments, sworn to secrecy, have convened to a top-secret research facility on this island. Here, they have been experimenting with nanotechnology. While they have been able to design nanobots, these nanobots are weak and unstable. Amidst government pressure and a lack of progress, the facility is in danger of shutting down.
YEAR: 2249
PLACE: Adrift in the Pacific
DESCRIPTION: It turns out the governments funding the nanotechnology research did not need to worry, Mother Nature had her own plan. Nearly 200 years ago, a huge tropical storm washed ashore of the island and destroyed the research facility, along with nearly everything else. While they had managed to clear out most equipment, we surmise they must have forgotten a phial of their research. This phial, sealed and protected, probably washed out to sea. As the nanobots inside repaired themselves, they ever so slowly made themselves stronger and more capable. After nearly 200 years of this minute evolution, these nanobots began to gain a glimmer of sentience. This is where it began...the beginning of HIVE.
YEAR: Present (2291)
PLACE: All over the world
DESCRIPTION: We've been running from HIVE for years, but it seems like our numbers grow smaller every month. All it takes is a speck of infected blood for the nanobots to begin colonizing you. There's a reason it's called HIVE... Actually, its name is H-IIV nanotechnology, which stands for Hyper-Invasive Intravenous, but people just know it as HIVE. Once the nanobots are introduced into your bloodstream, it only takes a few seconds before they begin to reproduce. They literally break down your body and rebuild it, turning you into a mechanized drone from the inside-out. Once they reach your brain the transformation is complete, and your consciousness is replaced by the HIVE's.
We're hiding out in the middle of a desert now. HIVE has destroyed most of the planet's ecosystems, and deserts aren't too hard to come by. Drones can't stay in the desert too long because the sand messes with their machinery, so I think we're safe...maybe. Every day they seem to get closer, evolving to become stronger, determined to hunt us all down... I don't want to be the last stand of humanity.
