First step: Skin modeling
First, you must keep in mind the model of your skin, you can put an image to help you drawing it. Recomended programs: SkinEdit, is a free skinning program.
When you are happy with your model, let's go to the Second step.

Second Step: Skin basic shading
So, let's start a little basic shading at SkinEdit. This will be our Gimp shading basic. In border, put the same color than the normal but a bit more darker. This will be the darkening base. Do the same in another areas with an more light color. When you got happy with your result, save. Close SkinEdit and we now work with Gimp in the Third Step. Our skin is taking shape :)

Third Step: Gimp final shading
Gimp is a bit more easy to shade. You may familiarizate yourself with the burning/dodge tool. Shade you skin as much you want, and, when you are glad with the result, finish it!
