We tried to stop the mob invasion by deploying experimental chemical bombs. The Abominations are the product of our soldiers' bodies being warped and corroded by the ensuing gas cloud. And if you look close, you can see the remnants of it's gas mask. They didn't work too well against the bombs.
(Quick note: This would look SO MUCH better if transparency was supported. Those white extensions are supposed to be bones.)
