The Dark Ages. Rulers fight for territories, which were Roman shortly before. Barbarian invasion ruined Western Roman Empire leading to its extermination. New kings raised and new countries formed. Barbarian nations joined Christian religion and they were no more pagan. One of the empires formed because of this invasion is the Frankish Empire. Charlemagne or Charles the Great was maybe one of the greatest rulers of the Frankish Empire. Later it became the Holy Roman Empire....801 AD, Lands of Celtica( France ), native people like gauls and celts are still there by the rule of the emperor Charles... Medieval lords had armies but it was not all regular army. Many rulers hired mercenaries for the army. Many of them were people from the native tribes... Here is my Celtic Mercenary... I accented on anatomy. My goal was to make a simple but impressive warrior. His big muscles compensate the simple clothing and armouring, if we can say there is. As an artist I know human anatomy decently but creating a realistic one is a challenge with that pixellated form... I made a quick sketch of how would face and head look. In the skin I added two tails of hair on his backhead... Here is the drawing, made in Photoshop:
