Short Summary
William Roberts is a pirate with a cannon (swivel gun) for an arm that he calls "Brig-Breaker"
His nickname of "The Loose Cannon" was due to the fact he shoots the wick with his flintlock gun to make it fire almost instantaneously after he reloads the cannon.
This volley of cannonballs that streak any ship he raids also makes up for that.
A nice bonus feature is that if you put the previewer into the bow stance, it looks like he's aiming his cannon.

The Backstory
Part 1: Rebirth
William Roberts was a pirate, a legend at that. He sailed the seas on his ship, "The Pernicious Eagle", raiding countless merchant ships and plundering their loot.
His bad reputation was too great and countless pirate hunters sought the bounty on his head. While trying to fend off two of these hunter ships at once, Roberts was hit by a flintlock round in the right arm. Although he won the battle, the arm had to be amputated to save his life.
The good thing was... he had a gift of invention and was a leftie.
With his one good arm, he set off to forge himself a new one. Days and weeks past, his crew was worried for his safety as he spent hours tinkering in the Captain's Quarters.
Just as the First Mate was about to open the door to check on his captain, an explosion rocked the whole vessel. A cry of "Haha! Yes! I've done it mates!" resounded from the door.
The door was opened, only to find the Captain with a new arm. This was no ordinary arm. It was the missing swivel gun that Roberts "borrowed" for the time being, mounted where his arm used to be.
It was a glorious sight, if you could ignore the huge hole in the wall.
Part 2: Brig-Breaker
After that very day of his rebirth as a pirate, Roberts went on to test his new cannon arm by raiding a brig.
Carrying a chain shot (two cannonballs attached by chain), grape shot (A spread shot of small cannonballs) and an extra swivel gun cannonball on his person. he took the ship by storm. The lightweight modifications to his right arm made it possible to move easily.
The very arsenal of cannonball types loaded into his arm, along with his cutlass devastated the brig.
To make things worse, Roberts now found out how to fire his cannon automatically without using the full length of the cannon's wick. He shot the wick with the flintlock he kept on his bandolier.
That reckless move meant that he was able to fire shots at quick succession (as fast as he can reload the cannon& switch the wick). In the age of the flintlock pistol which had to be reloaded with gunpowder and bullets manually with a stick, this was fast enough for a cannon.
That successful raiding of the brig was his first success with his cannon arm. After looting the ship, he loaded in his cannonball into his cannon arm before firing at the hull. The ship sank immediately after. The ship was roaring with excitement and his arm was hailed as "Brig-Breaker".
For Roberts, he gave himself the monicker of "The Loose Cannon", the pirate who wielded a cannon for an arm.
